Where Is the Dishwasher Filter?

The dishwasher filter is usually located at the bottom of the dishwasher, underneath the bottom rack and lower spray arm. To find the filter, remove the lower rack and look for a circular or cylindrical mesh piece. The filter is typically located in the back corner or center of the bottom of the dishwasher.

All dishwashers have a filter, but not all filters require regular maintenance. The location, type and proper way to clean a dishwasher filter, if needed, depend on the specific model.

Always consult your product manual before attempting to remove or clean a dishwasher filter.

Cleaning a Dishwasher Filter: A Guide

Cleaning instructions will vary based on the dishwasher model you have; however, most dishwasher filters can be cleaned in a few steps. Use the following guide to efficiently clean your dishwasher filter.

Supplies

  • Warm water
  • Sink or large bowl

Tools

  • Soft brush, sponge or old toothbrush

1. Locate and Remove Your Dishwasher Filter

To access your dishwasher filter, start by removing the lower rack of your dishwasher. With the rack removed, you’ll see the bottom of the dishwasher and can locate the filter. Depending on your dishwasher model, the filter may include two separate parts: an upper filter assembly and a lower filter.

To remove the dishwasher filter, turn the upper assembly a quarter turn clockwise and lift it out. Then gently grab the lower filter, lift it slightly and pull it forward to remove it completely.

2. Clean the Dishwasher Filter

Run warm water through your dishwasher filter to remove soils, food debris and residue buildup. For more stubborn grime and calcium deposits, soak the dishwasher filter in warm water for a few minutes and then scrub with an old toothbrush or sponge. Never use a wire sponge or brush, as these may damage the filter.

3. Reinstall the Dishwasher Filter After Cleaning

After you’ve finished cleaning the dishwasher filter, make sure to properly reinstall it in your appliance. Reinstall the lower filter under the tabs, then align the upper filter with the round opening in the tub and securely fit it in place.

Turn the filter clockwise until you feel it fully locked into place. The filter should lock securely and not turn freely. To ensure you don’t damage your dishwasher, confirm that both the lower and the upper filters are firmly locked in place before you run your appliance.

Dishwasher filter installation instructions may vary based on your dishwasher model. Always consult your product manual before removing or replacing a dishwasher filter.

Clean your dishwasher filter every three to six months to maintain optimal performance. Depending on how often you use your appliance, you may need to clean your dishwasher filter more frequently.
